365 Days #181 – Chubby Checker Goes Disco! (mp3s)

181 "In a way, 'The Twist' really ruined my life. I was on my way to becoming a big nightclub performer, and 'The Twist' just wiped it out. It got so out of proportion. No one ever believes I have talent." –Chubby Checker

MP3:
A: The Rub (4:59)
B: Move It (4:42)

During my last used vinyl store run, I nearly killed myself going through every last 12" single they had in the racks. It was worth it, though, as I got some good stuff (like "Woodpeckers from Space" by Video Kids) including this Halloween-colored disco single by none other than Chubby Checker. I was slightly miffed at the $9 price tag... all I could think was, "Damn, this better be good. The E.T. Storybook ...

The Other Russia (On The Media: Friday, 22 June 2007)

This week, OTM turns its focus to Russia. How are the Russian media operating during an era of dramatic economic change, a clampdown on freedom of speech, and a struggle to reposition the country on the world stage? Host Brooke Gladstone, producer Mike Vuolo and technical director Dylan Keefe traveled to Moscow to speak with journalists, dissidents, and lawmakers about the current climate for press freedom. Garry Kasparov is known around the world as a chess champion. He’s also a vocal opponent of Vladimir Putin and what he calls Putin’s “police state.” Yevgeny Kiselyov was a big-time television anchor under Yeltsin. He’s a ...

Live Catch: June 29th-July 5th, 2007

Livecatch It's Friday and it's time for another installment of Live Catch, Beware Of The Blog's weekly guide to live music in WFMU's New York/New Jersey broadcast area.

Fursaxa A bunch of great bands are playing tonight at the Silent Barn. Finnish D.I.Y. weirdos Avarus, who played live on Brian Turner's show last year, are back in town for the evening. Member Jan Anderzen also performed live on his own back in 2005. Cassette Culture Revisited, Part VIII

Ray Zinnbrann - Takedowns, 1986 (.zip archive, 43MB)

CaseInsertRay Zinnbrann first came to the attention of WFMU's staff and listeners with the song "I Fell in Love at WFMU," popularized on Irwin's show.  Ray proved to be far from a one-note novelty act, being a skilled guitarist with psychedelic leanings and an idiosyncratically reedy but note-perfect vocal delivery.  At the Lo-Fi event I organized in 1988, Ray, decked out in a gold lamé vest, played a bombastic fuzztone rendition of "Also Sprach Zarathustra."  Not too long after their first meeting at that event, Ray and fellow Lo-Fi star Jet ...

365 Days #180 – Who Am I? Part III – The Blind Kids (mp3s)

180 MP3:
1. The Blind Kids - Track 1 (3:41)
2. The Blind Kids - Track 2 (3:59)
3. The Blind Kids - Track 3 (41:25)
4. The Blind Kids - Track 4 (1:41)

I first heard these tracks in Austin, Texas, back in the early 1990s.  They were part of a series of recordings by some kids at the Texas School for the Blind and/or the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center, recorded with the assistance of members of Texas bands Crust and Cherubs, and distributed to friends on cassette.  John Hawkins of Crust is the only person I am certain was involved, and all attempts to reach him have been futile.  I've known John for many years, but from what I gather ...

Alain Delorme’s Little Dolls

Delorme1

Alain Delorme's photo series Little Dolls features somewhat sexualized, somewhat drugged up looking young girls sitting at tables with very ornate cakes...and what are all those hands doing? Really demented, disturbing and hilarious stuff. Alain Delorme website.

The Gipper’s HMO

Reaganalbum Michael Moore's Sicko turned me on to another great moment in Ronald Reagan. In 1961 The American Medical Association hired the Gipper for a viral marketing campaign dubbed I kid you not, 'Operation Coffeecup.' Doing his part to scuttle the arrival of Medicare Reagan lays down an 11 minute rap explaining how Socialized Medicine can only lead to an America where men are not free. This record was then mailed out to the 'ladies auxiliary' (doctors wives) of the AMA in each county.
Was it this little record that kept Medicare from being signed into law until July 1965? Is this why we still don't have Universal Health Care? Give a listen: Reagan Speaks Out ...
