Not a whole lot is known about Moe Barbari. One day this demo CD arrived in the PO Box of Vinyl Communications Records, a punk/experimental label run by my friend Bob Barley. It became an immediate smash hit with at least several of us! "Let Me Be Your Man" is the standout track. Strained Iranian vocals and crappy Roland general midi synth arrangements. What's not to like? ...

Bear Down (On The Media: Friday, 22 June 2007)

Looking at the recent history of press freedom in Russia, it's worth considering the changes ushered in by former president Boris Yeltsin. When he died two months ago, Brooke compiled this report on Yeltsin's mixed legacy.

The Process (On The Media: Friday, 22 June 2007)

Between interviews in Moscow, Brooke, Mike, and Dylan recorded some of their impressions of the reporting process. Click here to read their behind-the-scenes blog.

The Bard (On The Media: Friday, 22 June 2007)

The tradition of “bards” has its roots in the Soviet Union of the 1960’s. Singer-songwriters wrote metaphorical protest songs that represented subtle opposition to the government. One of the best bards of the new generation, Timur Shaov talks about how the genre has evolved.

365 Days #178 - The Bordens - Theme From Star Wars (mp3)

178 MP3:
The Bordens - Theme From Star Wars (2:45)

You haven't truly heard the theme from Star Wars until you've heard it performed by Dryden, Ontario's The Bordens, with father George Borden (accordion), mom Jeanette (Electrovox organ), sons Roger (saxophone and guitar) and Gary (drums), and nephew Bill Dombradi (guitar). According to the liner notes, The Bordens played in "various parts of the country", including Thunder Bay and Edmonton, and recorded this album at Century 21 in Winnipeg. The snippets of other songs they throw into the mix, including the "snake charmer song", are just gravy. Good Times, indeed.

Video Four-Pack (Entrance, Talibam!, Celibate Rifles, Nation of Ulysses)

Time for another video four pack. Taking it from the top left, we first have Entrance performing their flanged-out smash hit from the recent "Prayer of Death" album on Tee Pee Records. I first heard this on Scott Williams' show, and that psycho guitar lick hasn't left my head since. I also caught Entrance's fierce live presentation not long ago at the Maxwell's nightclub along with DJ Trouble, and she and I both left with the mutually shared opinion that the rock had been delivered most effectively.

On the right are Brooklyn's totally insane purveyors of "shitstorm skronk", Talibam!, who are currently enjoying tremendous popularity in WFMU's fabled new bin, as this link demonstrates. This video contains the best evidence for true mastery ...

The Lion Keeps His Rights

Tokens Hank Medress died the other day. He was 68, and he had lung cancer, and he used to sing with a doo-wop group called the Tokens, back in the 1950s and ‘60s. The Tokens had a huge hit with a song called “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” in 1961, and then some more minor songs on the charts, and then Medress moved on to producing records for other groups like the Chiffons, and Tony Orlando and Dawn, and even David Johansen in his “Buster Poindexter” incarnation. The last thing Hank Medress was doing before he died was working as a consultant to Sound Exchange, which was described in his obituary as “a nonprofit group helping musicians collect ...
